Search contacts for more than Display Name

Is there a way to expand the search capabilities in the contacts for more than Display Name? I've tried adding Tags to my contacts, but since they don't get searched, it seems useless to have that capability.

I'm willing to edit source code if necessary, if someone can point me in the right direction.

This technically works, but an email recipient sees all the extra text in the name on their email client, which looks pretty unprofessional.

I may end up going this route, but there has to be someone who has poked through the source enough to give me a starting point of where I could change this.
