calendar email reminder

I'm new to OX6 and new to the forum. 2 questions: 1. How do I keep my ox6 email open and logged in? It logs me out automatically every hour or so. 2. When I make an appointment in the calendar and check to send an email reminder, it does not work ie no email sent. Is there another setting?
