  • Recommend a Host

    Hi

I hope I have posted this topic in the right location.

Please could someone recommend a host that provides Open-Xchange with the OXtender for SyncML installed so I can use Open-Xchange and sync with Blackberry devices.

I have looked but can't seem to find a suitable host.

    Many thanks
    Kev

    Hi,

what country are you from? I think a host in your location would be best suitable.

          Hi Martin

          Thanks for that.

I have tried 1&1 however they don't support the OXtender for SyncML.

I emailed Network Solutions and Hostpoint yesterday to see if they support OXtender for SyncML but as yet haven't had a reply.

I haven't heard of the others, I will look into them.

          Any that come recommended ?

          Thanks
          Kev

            Hi,

the question is, if they understood what you have meant with "OXtender for SyncML", most hosting partners are branding this as a "Mobility Solution" or "Push E-Mail" etc. At least in Germany, 1&1 offers mobile device synchronization.

            Greetings

              Hi Martin

I have used the terminology from the Open-Xchange website and always mention that its Blackberry devices and not Windows Mobile devices I want to sync.

Just got this reply from Hostpoint - "i'm sorry, oxtender is only supported for outlook and apple email. this is not an decision we can make, for which application oxtender runs, is the decision of the OX (producer). "

Not quite sure what that means, will have to back to them.

              Thanks
              Kev

                Hi,

mobile device synchronization is done via an external application like Funambol or O3SIS, it's the service providers decision to offer such a service or not. I can imagine that the support contact thought you want to run the Apple or Outlook Plug-In on a mobile device, which is not possible indeed.

                  Hi Martin

I have just heard back from Hostpoint, this is what they said :
"No we aren't able to support this. because this is not supported from the producer (we are only reseller for open-xchange)."

Am I wrong in thinking that a Blackberry device with the SyncJE Client can't be sync'd via SyncML with Open-Xchange ?

                    Hi,

this is correct, Open-Xchange does not provide a SyncML Service, this functionality is added by third party software like Funambol or O3SIS. If Hostpoint does not offer those addon services, you cannot synchronize via SyncML with your OX account.

                        Hi,

those are for the old Open-Xchange Server 5, with this product we maintained our own SyncML service, but this is not part of Open-Xchange Server 6 (which is used by our hosting partners).

                          Hi

That will be why I haven't got very far finding a host.

Why has support for SyncML been dropped, as far as I can see, you can't support Blackberry devices without it, or have I gotten that wrong to ?

I would really like to find a way of getting Open-Xchange to work with Blackberry devices as it is by far a better and cost effective system then I have seen for years

                            Hi,

we have dropped the SyncML development because we're making a groupware, not a mobile device synchronization and provisioning software. There are specialists on every sector, our slice of the market is groupware and webmail, maintaining every possible extension is really overkill. Solutions like O3SIS or Funambol are very complex and sophisticated products, there is no need to re-invent the wheel. Even if OX does not have a SyncML interface anymore, it is still possible to use your mobile phone to synchronize. The applications i mentioned before, are using our HTTP API and wrap those information to SyncML which is transfered to your device over-the-air. So still there is the possibility to sync your mobile but the hosting provider needs to offer it as a additional service. OX does not need to support any Blackberry/Nokia/iPhone device, that's a job for the SyncML server pros. When it comes to Blackberry, i think E-Mail sync/push is not possible right now without a BES/BIS because RIM has not opened up it's specification yet. Calendar/Contact sync will work.

                              Hi Martin

So what I should be looking for is a host that has Open-Xchange and is also running Funambol for example ?
